"If you can't beat 'em...cover em."

I've been playing ping pong competitively since I was just a few inches taller than the table. And though dreams of going pro passed me by, I'm grateful I got a chance to do the next best thing.

The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) offered me its annual media scholarship to cover the 2014 world championships in Tokyo. I was also part of the media team at the Beijing world paralympic championships later that year.

My duties included writing news and feature stories for the ITTF website, interviewing players and coaches for itTV and the ITTF YouTube channel (translating live for Mandarin speakers.) I also managed the @ittfworld Twitter and Instagram accounts, helming a live Twitter blog during the tournament knock out stages.

Stories of victory and defeat abound when you're covering sports. But beyond the big result, the little things stick with you: The forced smile of a veteran signing autographs after a close loss, the quiver in the voice of a vanquished olympic medallist, the gait of a woman who overcame a car crash to win a world title...

These things remind me why I do what I do. And that I'm called to do it well.
